MDF has a dense, resin-rich surface layer from the press and softer fibres in the core and at the edges. Sanding removes this outer layer and levels the board before lacquering, foiling or veneering, usually with a wide-belt sander. Because the exposed fibres absorb coating, MDF is normally sealed or primed before the topcoat.
