In random orbital sanding the sanding disc rotates and also moves in small eccentric orbits, so no abrasive grain follows the same path twice. This leaves a fine, non-directional scratch pattern with few visible swirl marks. It is used for fine sanding and denibbing, both with hand tools and in machines with several orbital heads.
